The Parish Priest

The parish priest is the religious minister of a local community. He is entrusted with all religious matters at the town level. Living among the parishioners, he pays attention to their concerns and preaches the Word of God.

The Priest and Role Playing

• The priest will create a thread on the local forum for the parish church and will request to have it set as an announcement for increased visibility.
• He will make contact with the town authorities (mayor and town council) and the people to represent the Church in public affairs.
• At all times, he shall be responsible for keeping a positive image associated with his position and with the Church. For instance, he shall not directly take punitive actions such as publicly calling for the Inquisition and shall refer such matters to his bishop.

Responsibilities

The town’s forum and taverns are the main places where the priest performs his duties:

• The sacraments.
• Baptizing the newcomers.
• Celebrating the mass on Sundays and feast days.
• Giving the Holy Communion to the faithfuls.
• Hearing confessions.
• Celebrating marriages.
• Administering the last rites.

The priest is also responsible for bringing religion into the social life of his community by:

• Investing the mayor and the town council with their authority
• Blessing people and worthy enterprises
• Performing the ritual of exorcism when needed

The priest may choose one or more deacons to assist him in performing his duties and to act as an occasional substitute.

Example of Charity

The priest must remain close to his fellow citizens.

• He is available for his parishioners, counsel them and fulfill their spiritual needs.
• He guides them through the different paths in society and refers them to the University and the library.
• He assists the poor through acts of charity, and may even be of economic and financial assistance.
Servant of God and Ambassador of the Church

The parish priest is the intermediate between the people and ecclesiastical authorities.

• He obeys dogma and puts into application papal bulls and edicts.
• He places himself under the authority of his bishop or ordinary.
• He stays in touch with the bishop and the clergymen of his diocese to share experience.
• He is responsible to his bishop for his actions and will frequently report the local issues of interest to him.
• He is ranked above religious and military orders but will work with them and introduce them to his parishioners.
• He attempts to convert as many people as possible to Roman Catholicism.
• He will strike down false religions and heresy.
• He sees that the historical context is respected by everyone
